BIO

Katie has been an artist most of her life. Originally from Orlando, Florida, she moved to Birmingham, Alabama where she graduated from the University of Alabama with a Fine Arts degree in ceramics and metal casting. In Birmingham, she taught workshops in metal casting to young artists in middle school through college and beyond. She worked with inner city kids in after-school art programs until she moved back to Orlando. It was there that she began freelance work with award-winning interior designers to create custom interior finishes for their clients. Over the last 2 decades Katie has also been Creative Director for a Bridal Accessories company, taught art classes in her home and in their homeschool community, restored antiquities, renovated houses, and raised babies.

She and her husband, Brett, have two awesome kids and attend The Experience Community Church where Katie is a part of the Art Ministry.

Course Description/Outline/Objectives:

This course is for students who intend to pursue a creative degree or career in Design, the Visual Arts or something similar.

We will explore a variety of different mediums that reflect complex ideas and techniques to build a well-rounded portfolio AND there will also be opportunities for students to explore independent self-directed projects.

Some mediums will include:

2D images like drawings, paintings, photography, artist prints, collaged works, and mixed media

3D work like sculpture, ceramics, textile experimentation, kinetic sculpture and environmental or site-specific installation.

Some of the themes & projects we'll cover will include:

Elements of Design

Our relationship and responsibility to the world around us

Exploration of religious inspiration

Reflections on popular culture

How our surroundings impact us.

Class time will focus on weekly projects, active group discussions, and artist critiques. We will have scheduled workdays for class projects, but some projects may require more work-at-home hours than others.

All students will be required to purchase a domain name (if they don’t already have one, this is usually under $10/year) and they will design their individual website under their domain for their own unique online portfolio.

**There are several options for free website builders, but some students may prefer to purchase one for more options.

By the time we wrap up the year, each student will be able to articulate their artist statement clearly and concisely with confidence and have a variety of works to add to their portfolio as they prepare for the next steps in their creative career.
