Matthew Bullington instructs math (Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2), Chemistry, Business and Life Skills, and ACT Prep at the Discipleship Tutorial. Having studied applied mathematics in the field of economics, Matthew loves bringing his passion for math and learning into the classroom. He loves taking intimidating subjects in math, business and science and making them accessible, relevant, and engaging, and focuses on how we can see God in every field.

A homeschool graduate, Matthew works as a college prep consultant through his company, UniversityReady, and brings his college expertise to ACT Prep. He has tutored for fourteen years, and brings this expertise along with his liberal arts Economics degree background to his classes at The Discipleship Tutorial.

Course Description/Outline/Objectives: 

This class is designed to walk students through their senior year, setting them up for success whether applying to college or trade school (or even if still undecided on what to do next). Students will receive access to an online planning platform with college research tools and a digital calendar for deadline tracking. The course will include:

  • A series of 4 personality and strengths tests

  • A group discussion of personality test results, as well as discussions of career paths that tie with those skills

  • Guidance on locating a career professional to provide guidance on the route to that career

  • Research and development of a list of colleges (or trade schools) to apply to

  • Creation of an application deadline calendar, with weekly objectives and check-ins

  • Research into scholarships, including benchmarks, and developing a plan for scholarship applications

  • Guest speakers from career professionals with advice to high school students on how to best make them marketable to companies

  • Cost evaluation for different college/trade school offers and cost/value analysis for expected job salaries

  • College/trade school visit and tour objectives

  • Discussion and evaluation of housing options

  • Personal SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats)

  • Transition to college/trade school action plan, including developing a written game plan for the first year after high-school (including building spiritual, social, and academic safety nets)
